Behind the Scenes: Our Summer Hotel Staff Who Made It All Happen
As the summer comes to an end, we want to take a moment to celebrate and acknowledge the incredible contributions of our seasonal summer staff at our UBC Vancouver hostel and hotels. Every year, UBC Conferences and Accommodation welcomes over 40 temporary full-time and part-time team members, many of whom are UBC students looking for meaningful work in the hospitality industry during their summer break. These roles offer a fantastic opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience, whether it’s their first job or they are returning for another summer with us.
Our hotels and accommodations see a significant increase in demand during the summer months, and the support from our seasonal staff is absolutely essential. From working at the front desks of our various properties to assisting in housekeeping, reservations, and sales, our summer staff ensure that every guest has a comfortable and memorable stay.
Meet Lucie and Maha: From Hotel Front Desk to Sales Team
Lucie (left in the image) and Maha (on the right) have both worked with us at the front desk in a previous summers. And both decided to return this year again!
Lucie, a current UBC student, first joined our team in the summer of 2023, taking on a role at the front desk. Her positive experience led her to return in the spring of 2024, this time as our Group Sales Coordinator. In this role, Lucie collaborates with group organizers to ensure every detail of their stay is perfect—from identifying accommodation needs to managing arrivals and resolving any concerns. What Lucie appreciates most about her experience is the strong sense of camaraderie and support within the hotel’s team, as she works closely with the sales, reservations, and front desk teams to create seamless experiences for our guests.
Maha’s journey with us began three years ago while she was completing her undergraduate and graduate programs at UBC. Starting at the front desk, she quickly formed meaningful friendships with her colleagues—many of whom have since advanced into various roles within UBC Conferences and Accommodation. This supportive network made her decision to return and spend the summer with us an easy one. This summer, Maha served as our Summer Conference Services Manager, overseeing the full scope of conference bookings, including meeting spaces and group accommodations. She ensured that all groups, whether large or small, have an outstanding experience during their stay.
As the summer sun sets, we say a heartfelt thank you to our incredible seasonal team! While we couldn’t feature everyone in this post, please know that each and every one of them played an integral role in making this summer a success.
We are grateful for the care and enthusiasm they’ve brought to our hotels, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors. We hope to see many of them return next summer!
